About The Open Mosque
Our Story
Home of Erudite, Egalitarian and Enlightened Islam
The Open Mosque was established to create a welcoming space where people from all backgrounds can engage with faith, community, and dialogue in a thoughtful and inclusive environment.
We believe that understanding grows through conversation, learning happens through openness, and community thrives when everyone feels valued and heard. Our mosque serves as a bridge between tradition and contemporary life, encouraging thoughtful engagement with Islamic teachings while promoting interfaith understanding.
Located in the heart of Cape Town’s diverse Wynberg community, we are committed to being a space of learning, reflection, and genuine human connection.

The Founder’s Vision

Dr Taj Hargey
Dr Taj Hargey is a South African-born Islamic scholar, educator, and advocate for progressive Islam. With deep roots in Cape Town’s Muslim community and extensive academic credentials from Oxford University, Dr Hargey has dedicated his life to promoting an Islam that is open, inclusive, and engaged with contemporary society.
His vision for The Open Mosque stems from a belief that faith communities should be spaces of learning and dialogue, not division. He advocates for gender equality, interfaith understanding, and a return to the ethical core of Islamic teachings.
Through education and open conversation, Dr Hargey works to create spaces where people can explore faith with intellectual honesty and human compassion.
Our Vision
To build a community where understanding, compassion, and dialogue flourish where faith is a source of connection rather than division.
